Jr/Sr High Handbook
While we understand there are legitimate reasons to miss school, it is the feeling at Newburgh Christian School that students need to be in class to maintain good grades and to achieve their full potential. Because we want to encourage regular attendance, we have the following attendance policies.
Each student is allowed five excused absences per semester. For an absence to be excused, the following steps must be followed:
1. Any absence must be called in by the parent on the day of absence, OR a written note with the parent's signature on the day the student returns.
2. It is the student's responsibility to complete all work missed during an absence.
After five absences, the only reasons considered excused:
1. Illness verified by a doctor's written excuse turned into the office.
2. Death or funeral of a relative or close family friend.
If an absence is unexcused after the fifth absence, the student shall receive a zero on any work due that day (homework, reports, etc.) and all assignments done in class (class work, quiz, test).
Field trips are required attendance.
Students missing more than twenty days of school per semester may be required to repeat that semester or class. When there is an extended illness that will go over the 20 days, please contact the office to arrange for home-based work. If this arrangement is not made, the days missed may be unexcused.
VACATIONS
If a family will be taking a vacation during the school year, we will make every effort to accommodate it as long as the student has not already missed an excessive amount of days or is performing poorly in their school work. We will assume the student will be doing their work during the time they are gone so we request that you let the office know in advance to give the teachers time to prepare the assignments for the student. If the student does not take the work with them and complete it, it will be a zero. A student has the option to do the work before leaving, as long as it is not an excessive amount of time.
TARDINESS
Regular tardiness often seriously affects the student's class work and disrupts the class. We expect students to be on time to every class. Three times of unexcused tardiness will result in one unexcused absence.
